SERMON SERIES: VINTAGE VIBES

PAST SERMONS (OVER FOUR DECADES) REIMAGINED FOR MODERN LIFE

There Were Many Women | March 29

The Mission of The Tabernacle of Glory

The mission of our church is “We use our resources, tangible and intangible, to minimize human suffering and enhance human well-being. This is godliness to us.”

Jesus Before Christianity Series

The “Jesus Before Christianity” series addresses the crucial need for clarity about what it truly means to follow Jesus Christ, beyond the label “Christian.”

Mark 15:41

“When He was in Galilee they followed Him and ministered to Him, and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.”

Gender Justice

  • As a church that practices gender justice we become a people and place where more gifts are recognized and used for the glory of God.
  •  Gender justice strengthens families and communities by removing barriers to education, health, and meaningful work with equitable pay.
  •  Committing to gender justice allows our church to welcome, empower, care, seek justice, build peace, and learn from all God’s people.
  •  Our church allows voices to have equal standing; it is our living testimony to the surrounding community that we are credible in our Christian witness.
  •  Gender justice seeks healing for those harmed by inequality and violence and invites transformation of actions and practices, which confirms that we embody a Gospel message that reconciles and restores dignity to everyone.

Greenisms

  • If the women had not stayed, nobody would have been there to tell and preserve the immediate and living details of the event accurately…
  • We need this sermon because it offers history. History is the teacher; the present is the classroom…
  • God’s Kingdom upends social hierarchies regardless of status, class, and gender.
  • Do not despise the seemingly small testimonies.
  • God works in through unexpected people and in unexpected places based on what humanity thinks is unexpected…

The Gospel of Equality 1:1-7 (WVG Version)

“In the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Jesus’ treatment of women exemplifies His radical commitment to dignity and equality. Unlike the societal norms of His time, which often relegated women to second-class status, Jesus elevated their status and value in profound ways. Across these accounts, a singular thread emerges: Jesus redefined the roles of women and affirmed their voices. The Gospel narratives celebrate women, urging us to honor and uplift their contributions in the ongoing story of faith. As we reflect on these teachings, we are called to emulate Jesus’ example, treating every person as valuable and cherished in God's eyes.”

10 Affirmations by Janna Wright

The Tabernacle of Glory Church intentionally embraces and supports women in all aspects of ministry and life.

1. You are loved and liked by God.

2. You have unique abilities and a distinct purpose designed by God.

3. Your voice matters.

4. We need your strengths.

5. You are valuable.

6. You are an indispensable part of the body of Christ.

7. We support you.

8. You are a delight, not a danger or an annoyance.

9. You are cared about and loved as sisters in Christ.

10. Any “not enough” is more than enough in Christ.

Implications for How Jesus Treated Women

  • Jesus frequently highlighted women as positive examples in His stories and teachings, showcasing their strength and faith.
  • Jesus consistently challenged cultural stereotypes and norms that marginalized or silenced women.
  •  Jesus empowered women to take active roles in His ministry, elevating their status and demonstrating that their contributions were both valuable and necessary.
  • Jesus engaged with women as equals, treating them as individuals worthy of respect, rather than as objects of male desire.
  • Jesus viewed women through the lens of their relationship with God, themselves, and others rather than defining them by their gender, age, or marital status.
  • Jesus often spoke publicly to women, a practice uncommon for men of His time, and treated them with care and respect.
  • Jesus accepted and affirmed women as individuals of worth, including those who were neglected or rejected by society.

For Ways for Men to Become Allies to Women

  • Recognizing Historical Injustices.
  • Reflecting on Privilege.
  • Apologizing for Silence and Inaction.
