When Comfort Meets Challenge

Eight MARKS of Christianity Against the Teachings and Practices of Jesus

Exclusion and Marginalization: Practices that lead to the exclusion of certain groups based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status are harmful and do not reflect the life of Jesus.

Fear and Control: When religious teachings are used to control behavior through guilt, shame, or intimidation, they deviate from the message and ministry of Jesus.

Lack of Compassion: Prioritizing doctrine over compassion can be damaging. Practices that foster judgment instead of understanding contradict the core teachings of love and kindness exemplified by Jesus.

Resistance to Questioning: Beware of harmful practices discouraging questioning or critical thinking. Healthy faith communities should encourage dialogue and exploration rather than suppress unorthodox views.

Denial of Personal Agency: Practices that undermine personal agency or dictate life choices without regard for individual circumstances can be harmful.

Justification of Violence or Harm: Any practice that justifies violence, discrimination, or harm against others is naturally harmful. Actual spiritual teaching should promote peace, flourishing, and wellness.

Emotional and Psychological Distress: If involvement in religious practices leads to increased anxiety, depression, or feelings of worthlessness, it may indicate harm. Faith should be a source of hope and healing, not distress.

Focus on Materialism or Power: When religious practices prioritize material wealth, power, or status over spiritual growth and service to others, they detract from the intended purpose of the life and teachings of Jesus.

Six Healthy Indicators to Recognize When Comfort Meets Challenge

Open Listening

·       Embrace Open Dialogue: Create spaces where individuals can share their experiences and perspectives without fear of judgment.

Deepening Empathy

·       Engage Imaginatively: Actively seek to understand the experiences of those whose lives differ from ours.

Holding Convictions with Openness

·       Balance Beliefs with Flexibility: Hold your beliefs firmly while remaining open to other viewpoints.

Seeking Alternative Perspectives

·       Pursue Informed Understanding: When faced with doubts about your own beliefs or those of others, actively seek out alternative facts and explanations.

Collective Problem Solving

·       Collaborate Across Differences: Welcome opportunities for collaborative efforts in problem-solving and decision-making.

Appreciating Diversity

·       Celebrate Our Differences: Foster a sense of belonging within diversity. By embracing a variety of perspectives and experiences, we can appreciate the richness that variation adds to our lives and communities.

Enter to Worship/Depart to Serve

Enter to Worship, Depart to Serve Scripture References Luke 4:16-21 (NLT)

“He went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah, the prophet, was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found where this was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled today!”

Tim Keller Defines Biblical Justice

Eight Ideas Regarding Enter to Worship/Depart to Serve

Click to edit text. What do visitors to your website need to know about you and your business?

  • Jesus, before Christianity, made other people’s problems His problems. It is not convenient or easy. I am called to do the same.

  • Consider the cost and value of taking risks. Remember that the work won’t always yield the results I hope to see, but I must still do the job.
  •  I must not force an agenda on people; I must approach them respectfully by asking them questions, listening to them, observing them, and paying attention to their needs. Rather than offering a prepackaged response, ask God to guide me to respond in ways that best fit each situation.
  •  People are motivated not by abstract ideas, but by individuals whose actions show genuine care and whose words carry profound meaning.
  •  Authentic Christian discipleship means guiding others away from racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, inequality, indifference, and apathy. I commit to working in unity with those who are different from me but share the same goals.
  • I must connect with marginalized individuals who face unfairness. Be attentive to the opportunities God provides for me to assist those whom society often overlooks and considers unimportant.
  •  Whenever I do what God has led me, the hope I bring to others is invaluable. I am confident that the victories (big or small) will always outweigh our defeats when we work for God.
  •  The example of Jesus calls me to create space in my life to make a difference in the world. I must free up time, money, and emotional energy to take on the service assignments God brings me.

Jesus Goes To Worship

Jesus Goes to Worship Scripture References: Luke 4:16-21 (NLT)

Acts 4:32-37 (NLT) “All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. No needy people were among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need. For instance, there was Joseph, the apostle nicknamed Barnabas (“Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.”

Jubilee...

  • Jubilee offered a chance for individuals and families who had lost their land due to debt or misfortune to reclaim their ancestral property, restoring their dignity and social status.

  • The return of land provided a means for the deprived to rebuild their livelihoods, ensuring access to resources needed for sustenance and economic stability.

  • Families returning to their land could reintegrate into their communities, fostering social cohesion and a sense of belonging.

  • Jubilee reinforced the idea of divine justice and mercy, reminding the people that the land ultimately belonged to God and that they were stewards of His creation.

  • The Jubilee system would balance the deep-rooted social hierarchies, prompting those in power to reevaluate their roles and responsibilities toward the less fortunate.

  • It called the wealthy to consider their responsibilities toward their neighbors, emphasizing the importance of compassion and generosity within the community.

Amos 5:21-24 (The Message Version)

"God declares, I can’t stand your religious meetings. I’m fed up with your conferences and conventions. I want nothing to do with your religion projects, your pretentious slogans, and goals. I’m sick of your fundraising schemes, public relations, and image-making. I’ve had all I can take of your noisy ego music. When was the last time you sang to me? Do you know what I want? I want justice—oceans of it. I want fairness—rivers of it. That’s what I want. That’s all I want. I want you to be like a river, flowing with justice, and like a stream with fairness.”
